My leg accidentally touched Orla’s as we sat, and she moved away as if I had burnt her. What the hell was that about? Did I come on too much? Did I not come on at all and that cheesed her off? Well, that was the plan, originally… it was still the plan, for now. It had been overtaken by the plan to keep her safe. I took a deep breath and focused as Amanda was telling us the tale of how she bought the salon. Luckily, Orla reined her back on the topic.

‘The former owner was my mother-in-law, Madina’s boss.’

Now she had our attention.

‘She was, and probably still is, a horrible, nasty, miserable piece of work,’ Amanda said with a scowl. It made her look tougher with that short blonde cut as well.

‘So, you’ve divorced her son, or are you widowed?’ I asked.

‘Divorced. I wish I was widowed because at least he would have been good for something – some life insurance.’

I saw Orla’s expression which mirrored mine. Amanda was going to call it like it was and this was no happy family.

‘Can you tell us anything you know or learned about Madina’s relationship to the family?’ Orla asked.

Amanda nodded. ‘It was before my time, but it was a bit of a scandal.’ She lowered her voice as if the walls had ears. Maybe they did.

She continued, ‘My mother-and-father-in-law, Yelena and Alexei, employed Madina to do the salon books, reception fill-in, that sort of thing. I believe she was beautiful and lonely. She had a young boy too from memory. Anyway, Yelena and Alexei had long since fallen out of love – my father-in-law, Alexei, was the kindest and loveliest man to ever walk the earth; how he ended up with Yelena is anyone’s guess.’

I saw Orla give me a look of significance; I just didn’t know what it meant.

Orla asked Amanda, ‘Was it an arranged marriage in Russia before they settled here or did they meet here, do you know?’

Amanda nodded, full of her own importance. ‘They married in Russia and then emigrated here, but it wasn’t arranged. Yelena was from money, Alexei wasn’t – he was a very handsome and in-demand musician and Yelena went against her family's wishes by marrying him. They emigrated here and as time went on and they struggled financially, he couldn’t give her all she was used to having, so she made his life a misery. God rest his soul.’

‘Indeed,’ I said. ‘So, what was the scandal?’

‘Well Alexei was a very handsome, lonely and unloved man in his forties, Yelena was a bitchy, miserable wife and in comes Madina, a lonely, beautiful woman in her late twenties.’

I nodded. ‘Got it.’

‘But Alexei didn’t leave his wife, Yelena?’ Orla asked.

‘No, Yelena found out about the affair and Madina left. Someone said she ran off with another guy, who knows, but it all came to an end pretty fast.’

‘And you married Yelena and Alexei’s son?’ I asked.

‘Maxim, their only child, and Yelena spoiled and idolized him.
